SWEATING ENERGEY IN THE PULPIT

For as long as I can remember people have talked to me about the necessity of sweat. The teachers in school talked to me about the hard work necessary to get out of high school; you had to "sweat it" over all that homework to graduate. The advice did not change much in college; a college education was earned by late nights and a lot of "sweating" over the books.

When I got to seminary and was studying to become a preacher, I again was told that the secret of great preaching was the amount of study and sweat that went into the preparation of the sermon; it was "the sweat in the study that made for quality and power in the pulpit." The claim was made that there could be no excuse for the shallow and the disorganized presentations which are said to be presented as sermons in many churches today except the lack of effort and sweat in the study.

It has only been in the last few years that I began to understand there was another kind of sweat necessary for good preaching. It was made very obvious to me when various members of the congregation would suggest that the ministers of the church could remove their robes during the summer because it was so hot, and nobody needed to sweat in worship.I guess it was the perception that preachers should not sweat while preaching that confronted me with the very reality that it was, indeed, the absence of this sweat in the pulpit which suggested why so much of the preaching we hear today has so little power. Recently when one member suggested that I might take off my robe during the summer, I said to her, "Michael Jordan does not complain about sweating while he works. Broadway actors do not worry about sweating while they are on stage. Musicians and rock singers are accused of not working hard enough on a show if they do not sweat while performing.

"A preacher may not be giving a performance, but a preacher has to put as much energy and effort into his or her delivery as those on stage or it comes across as weak and dull. It is this dimension of sweating, real drops of sweat on the Pulpit Bible, that I have come to appreciate and to use as a measurement of just how much effort has gone into getting the Word of God from my head and heart into the head and heart of the congregation.
Pastor Nicholas sweating on the pulpit while Preaching

In reflecting on my seminary speech courses, I recall they were concerned with the dimension of energy invested in delivery, but somehow I got lost when they started talking about vowel sounds and how they needed to overcome my southern accent. I got lost in all the exercises of inflection, tone, rate, and volume. Sure, all of those exercises do contribute to the effectiveness of a presentation. They are means by which energy is invested in sermons, but my twenty years in the ministry now suggest to me that it is the energy invested, and not the accent or the inflections, which is the most important.

If a young man were to propose to a young woman with proper inflection and tone but no passion, she would be well advised to reject his offer. If he were to propose with real passion, probably the inflection, tone, rate, and volume would all seem correct, or she would overlook whatever faults were a part of that proposal.

This is not a defense for the reduction of sweat and effort in the study; it is an appeal for more sweat, work and energy invested in the preaching of the sermon. One of the most powerful preachers I ever listened to was so exhausted at the end of each preached sermon that he had trouble carrying on conversations at the after-service coffee. He was wet with sweat and emotionally drained. It should have been an object lesson for me even then, but it has taken me a few more years to understand what was happening.

I now understand that it is "sweat-energy" -- intensity, conviction, power of delivery -- that makes the difference.

Sweat in the study, and sweat in the pulpit. Most of the failures I have experienced in worship myself -- and most of the times when I have worshiped in other places and come away feeling unfulfilled -- it has been because there was no "sweat" generated in the presentation. We preachers have to work at "presenting" the Word of God -- with the same spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional effort that we expect from the actor on stage, the singer in concert, and the hero in the sporting event.

There are many who keep asking the question: What happened to preaching; where have all the great preachers gone? I suggest that one of the things that has happened in preaching is that preachers stopped sweating in the pulpit. Preachers wanted to look and be dignified, calm and intellectual, but they did not bother to find out how to be dignified, calm, and intellectual and still convey power, energy, intensity, and conviction.

When more preachers need to wipe the sweat off their chins in the middle of a cold winter sermon, perhaps we will see the return of more great preaching.

CONNECT TO YOUR MIRACLE

A preacher may not be giving a performance, but a preacher has to put as much energy and effort into his or her delivery as those on stage or it comes across as weak and dull. It is this dimension of sweating, real drops of sweat on the Pulpit Bible, that I have come to appreciate and to use as a measurement of just how much effort has gone into getting the Word of God from my head and heart into the head and heart of the congregation.
2 Kings 4:8-17 NIV One day Elisha went to Shunem. And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat. (9) She said to her husband, "I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. (10) Let's make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us." (11) One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there. (12) He said to his servant Gehazi, "Call the Shunammite." So he called her, and she stood before him. (13) Elisha said to him, "Tell her, 'You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?'" She replied, "I have a home among my own people." (14) "What can be done for her?" Elisha asked. Gehazi said, "Well, she has no son and her husband is old." (15) Then Elisha said, "Call her." So he called her, and she stood in the doorway. (16) "About this time next year," Elisha said, "you will hold a son in your arms." "No, my lord," she objected. "Don't mislead your servant, O man of God!" (17) But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.
Every miracle we read about in the Bible was recorded for a purpose. Miracles were not just intended for the people who received them but they were intended to touch and bless all generations.
Acts 2:39- The promise of the Holy Spirit is not just for us but for all whom the Lord will call
1 Corinthians 15:22-23- Because Christ rose from the dead it follows that all who believe will rise from the dead.
 Locked up in every miracle is the anointing to reproduce and perpetuate the same miracle
 Locked up in every miracle is a prophetic message of defeat and victory over the powers of the enemy
 We unlock and release the anointing that is locked up in a miracle through preaching and reading God’s word
Therefore Locked up in the miracle of the Shunamite woman is the anointing of conception and the anointing that breaks every spirit of barrenness. As you prayerfully read this sermon, may the anointing that breaks the spirit of barrenness be released upon your life in the name of Jesus. May you become fruitful and increase in all areas of your life.
HOW THE SHUNAMITE WOMAN CONNECTED TO HER MIRACLE
Child of God, God has already worked out your miracle. In fact, even before you were born your miracle had always been waiting for you. All you need to do is to recognize and connect to your miracle.
2 kings 4:8- “One day Elisha went to Shunem”

HOW DO I KNOW THAT GOD'S WILL IS FOR MY LIFE?

What is God's will for your life? Many students desire to do God's will, but struggle because they don't know what God's will is. The following are some principles from God's Word that will help you to discern what God's will is for you.

  1. God does have great plans for your life!

We were created by God, in His image, for a purpose. Just as God set apart from birth Isaiah (Isaiah 49:1), Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:5) and Paul (Galatians 1:15) for a specific purpose, he also has a specific plan for your life.

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declared the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11).

The Bible says that God's will is “good, pleasing and perfect” (Romans 12:2).

  2. God's will, first and foremost, is that we have a relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ.

“This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4).

  3. God wants us to be Christ's disciples.

This means Christians must be committed to following God's will daily, whatever the cost.

“If anyone would come to me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23).

  4. The Bible will help us to know God's will.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105).

  5. God promises to give us wisdom if we just ask Him in prayer, believing that He will give it.

Sometimes we need to just ask God to give us wisdom to discern His will.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).

In Philippians 4:6, God tells us that we can pray about everything.

  6. God has given us the Holy Spirit for guidance.

“...when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth...” (John 16:13a).

  7. We should listen to the advice of godly men and women that God has placed in our lives.

Many times the advice of a parent, pastor, youth minister, Sunday School teacher or other mature person is just what we need to hear to help us decide what God wants us to do.

“The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice” (Proverbs 12:15).

“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22).

  8. The Bible says that there is a peace that comes when we are pleasing God with our lives.

When deciding between two alternatives that you have been praying about, sometimes one of the options will give you a greater peace. That option is probably God's will.

“The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever” (Isaiah 32:17).

  9. We should trust God in faith that He will accomplish His will in our lives.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in your will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).

  10. God has given each of us gifts and abilities to use in His service.

God always equips us to do what he calls us to do. If you aren't gifted in a certain area, God is probably not calling you to minister in that area. (see Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 and Ephesians 4:11-13 for lists of spiritual gifts and a discussion of them.)

Remember that God's ultimate purpose for all of us is that He would be glorified (1 Corinthians 10:31) and that the gospel and God's kingdom would be advanced (Genesis 50:20 and Philippians 1:12).

GOD HEALED MORE MANY IN 2nd BUJUMBURA MISSION.

Through prayer, we acknowledge that there is a greater wisdom and higher power than anything on earth. We get in touch with that power and ask that god bring miracles and His love into our lives, but we don’t have to turn our backs on the rich and varied medical traditions available here on earth when we do pray, because God heals in many ways:

AM I BUILDING WHAT THE LORD WANT ME TO BUILT

Pr. Nicholas praying on the prayer mountain
Through the prophet Haggai, the Lord spoke to the Israelite s who had returned from exile in Babylon, rebuking them for not proceeding with the rebuilding of the temple. They had built their own houses but not the Lord's.

Reading these words gave me pause. In what ways do I "build" my own house but neglect His. I realized how often and how easily I slip into making my own plans for both the Eclectic Home school Online and my family's homeschooling, but am I building what the Lord would have me build?
The Eclectic Home school Online is a ministry of helps. I have long known that the Lord gifted me with the ability to help others fulfill their calling. In doing so it is often easy to rely on this gift rather than the giver. But if the Eclectic Home school is to succeed in its ministry, it will only be through God's guidance.
The Lord has given each of us gifts that differ from person to person. The following illustration about gifts has always struck with me. Having a particular gift is like being able to get on the elevator to go to the top of a twenty-story building. It's much harder to get to the top without the elevator, although it can be done. The person with the gift finds it easy to do the things for which they are gifted. But just as you wouldn't want to take an elevator to the top of a building for no purpose, you don't want to use your gift without guidance.
I also find it true in homeschooling that it is easy to slip into doing things my way. My children are each temples of the Holy Spirit. It behooves me to remember that and place as my top priority the building up of their spiritual man. Academics, life skills, and extra-curricular activities will all fall into place if I choose to follow His plan rather than my own.
Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: "Consider your ways! You have sown much, and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes." Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Consider your ways! Haggai 1:5-7

OVERCOMING FEAR IN YOUR LIFE

Pr Nicholas with the children in Garissa at Garissa Academy;
I’ve also learned that whenever I command fear to go I need to ask the Holy Spirit to put something in its place. That can be peace or some opposite of whatever I’m feeling, but I’ve also found that He prefers to change my focus. Fear is self-focused. Even if we are fearful of something terrible happening to someone else, the fear is in what that event will do to me. When we’re self-focused, it’s easier for fear to take hold, so often God turns my focus elsewhere. It’s surprising that worrying about how to help someone else in difficulty can keep you from being fearful, but it does. Too often, we think that we will overcome problems in our thought life by thinking holy thoughts. It’s far more useful to spend your thoughts on finding solutions to other peoples problems or praying for them. Once you’ve prayed that God deliver you from a specific fear, find someone else to pray about. From there, you’ll find it much easier to move into praise and thanksgiving, and you will discover that somewhere along the way you’ve found a measure of peace for yourself.
We live in a fallen world. Each of us must learn to deal with the effects that sin has brought into it. For some, that means repeatedly beating back the spirit of fear. It can be defeated in your life because the Lord Jesus has already defeated it. Remember, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” The power of the Holy Spirit will set you free and enable you to think clearly and see reality as it truly is. In The Name Of Jesus, the sprit of fear must flee. Command it to go. Get help when you need it. Turn your focus off yourself and on to the needs of others.
"Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders."(Deut 33:12)

THE NEW CONVENT THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST

    The New Covenant

We enter into this new covenant with God by faith. By faith we receive the blood that Jesus shed as a holy sacrifice for our sins. The blood of Jesus makes us holy and worthy to receive God’s Holy Spirit in us. In this new covenant we agree to be led by God’s Holy Spirit. The proof of our faith is our obedience to God. Faith without works is dead faith. For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. (James 2:26) When we are not obeying the Holy Spirit we feel dead.

God’s part of this new covenant is for Him to adopt us as His children so that we become heirs of God and co-heirs with Jesus Christ, (Romans 8: 9-17). God promises to put His Holy Spirit in us, the Spirit of adoption. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." (Rom 8:14-15)

The Holy Spirit gives us divine communication from God and the power to obey His instructions. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them," (Heb 10:14-16). The same power that Jesus had on earth to give His life fully to the Father we now have in us. When we receive instructions from God through the Holy Spirit we also receive the power to obey the instructions.

It is the blood of Jesus that cleans our conscience from sin and it’s influence upon us.  For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? (Heb 9:13-14) When we receive the blood of Jesus we receive a new conscience that desires to serve and obey God, a conscience that enjoys obeying God.

When Jesus blood was applied to your life you became conscious of righteousness and unconscious to sin. You were not only set free from sin, you were set free from the hold that sin had on you. You were set free from the influence of sin. It is the blood of Jesus Christ that makes you Holy Spirit conscious, God conscious, causing you to walk in the Light of His fellowship.

We were set free from dead works so that we can serve the Living God. The blood of Jesus sets us free from things that lead to death. We are set free from Satan, the world, and our self. Only when we are walking in freedom can we serve God. God puts a desire in our heart to serve Him out of love. Serving God is a form of worship. God desires that we worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. Truth always sets people free. True servants of the Most High God serve Him in the Spirit of Love, and in the freedom of Truth.

    07 SOUND OF REGRET

07 Sound of Regret (James 4:17, Romans 7:15)
This is a song that communicates the feeling of doing something wrong, translating it to a heavy beating heart as the sound of your regret. There are three scenarios that are covered. The first is lying, the second is a guilty conscience, and the third is casting blame. Lying in this instance is seen as lying to protect ones self from the consequences of there actions, then this feeds the guilty conscience knowing what they did. Then finally even in being caught, the person still tries to protect themselves by casting blame in either direction to how they are right or free from blame. In all three scenarios, the person knows of their sins and is reminded of it by their hard beating heart. Even though other people may not know the sins, God does.

But your heart beats much louder than your thought.
‘Cause that’s, the sound of regret.

I love you in the name our Lord.

DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO EVERY WORD PEOPLE SAY (Ecc 7:21)

Just before beginning your day ask yourself about how you are going to spend this wonderful day. Would you think about bad experience in your past or worry about how to make your future better or live only for this day? Would you hate yourself because people are not liking you? Would you think that I am lonely because I don't have friends? Would you underestimate yourself if others said something which you felt to be right? Would you work only for money? Would you blame your parents or your life for whatever you are right now? Would you only think about yourself? Would you think about your problems, illness and disorder everyday? Would you react and get angry with everyone coming on your way due to carrying all those burdens mentioned above? The answer is simple. Forgive, Forget and move on. This is the day which will give you happiness, prosperity and peace. You decide something and go for it. If you believe that you can reach there then all you have to do is die for it. You are greater then you think. Your potential is beyond your imagination. The time will come that you know something about life which others cannot figure it out. THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HAS MADE AND WE HAVE TO BE GLAD IN IT...

A man should not listen to everything that is said of himself or others; he should not curiously inquire what men say of him; and what he himself hears he should take no notice of; it is often best to let it pass, and not call it over again; to feign the hearing of a thing, or make as if you did not hear it; for oftentimes, by rehearsing a matter, or taking up words spoken, a deal of trouble and mischief follows; a man should not "give his heart" to it
